What is a "contraceptive implant"?
A contraceptive implant is a small, flexible device placed under the skin of the upper arm by a healthcare provider. It releases hormones that prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation, which is the release of an egg from the ovary. The implant also thickens cervical mucus to make it harder for sperm to reach the egg. It is a long-lasting form of birth control, effective for several years, and can be easily removed if a person wishes to become pregnant or stop using it.
