What is "verbal apraxia"?
Verbal apraxia, also known as apraxia of speech, is a motor speech disorder that affects an individual's ability to plan and coordinate the movements needed for speech. People with verbal apraxia may know what they want to say but struggle to produce the correct sounds and sequences, resulting in inconsistent speech errors. This can lead to difficulty with pronunciation, rhythm, and fluency, often making speech sound awkward or unclear. The condition can occur after brain injuries or strokes but may also be present from early childhood. Treatment typically involves speech therapy focused on improving motor planning and coordination for speech production, helping individuals communicate more effectively.
