A first down in football is when the offensive team advances the ball at least ten yards within four attempts, known as plays. Achieving a first down allows the team to keep possession of the ball and get another set of four plays to try to move the ball further down the field. If the team does not gain ten yards in four attempts, they must either give up the ball to the other team or try a different strategy, such as kicking the ball to the other team.
