What is a "sex cell"?

A sex cell, also known as a gamete, is a specialized reproductive cell in the human body involved in sexual reproduction. There are two types of sex cells: sperm cells in males and egg cells (ova) in females. These cells are produced through the process of gametogenesis and contain half the genetic material of an individual. During fertilization, a sperm cell and an egg cell combine, resulting in the formation of a zygote that develops into an embryo. Sex cells are responsible for the transmission of genetic information from one generation to the next, ensuring the continuation of the species and contributing to the unique genetic diversity of offspring.
