Miss Beard is a slang term that emerged in mid–20th-century English, especially within gay communities, to describe a woman who pretends to be romantically involved with a gay man. The word "beard" comes from the idea of using something to hide or cover, like a literal beard covers a face; here it metaphorically "covers" the man's sexual orientation. The term was often used mockingly or critically, highlighting the social or personal motives behind such arrangements, such as avoiding suspicion or fulfilling societal expectations. Today it is still understood in LGBTQ+ contexts and retains a slightly derogatory or teasing tone, but it is mainly descriptive rather than a strong insult.
