What is a "surgical gown"?
A surgical gown is a type of personal protective equipment worn by surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in the operating room during surgical procedures to protect both the wearer and the patient from the spread of infection. It is typically made of a fluid-resistant material, such as polyester or a polyester blend, and has long sleeves and a high neck with ties at the back to secure it in place. The gown is designed to cover the front and arms of the wearer, as well as their clothing, and to extend down to the mid-calf or ankle to provide maximum coverage. The sleeves of the gown are typically cuffed to prevent any fluid from entering through the wrists. Some surgical gowns come with a reinforced front panel, which provides an additional layer of protection for the wearer in high-risk procedures. Surgical gowns must meet certain safety standards and regulations to ensure their effectiveness in preventing infection transmission in the healthcare setting.
