WHat is "cirrhosis"?
Cirrhosis is a late stage of scarring of the liver caused by many forms of liver diseases and conditions, such as hepatitis and chronic alcoholism. The liver carries out several necessary functions, including filtering harmful substances in the body, cleaning the blood, and making vital nutrients. Cirrhosis can lead to a number of complications, including liver cancer. People with cirrhosis may develop jaundice, which is the yellowing of the skin and eyes, intense itching, fatigue, and easy bruising or bleeding. The disease can be managed and complications treated, but cirrhosis cannot usually be cured. In advanced cases, a liver transplant may be needed. Early diagnosis and treatment of the underlying cause can help prevent or delay the progression of cirrhosis.
