What is a "horned owl"?
A horned owl is a large and powerful nocturnal bird of prey found in the Americas. It is characterized by its distinctive ear tufts or "horns" that are actually feathers, and its large, piercing yellow eyes. The horned owl has a mottled brown or grayish-brown plumage with intricate patterns that provide excellent camouflage in its woodland habitat. It has a wingspan of up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) and sharp talons used for capturing and killing its prey, which mainly consists of small mammals, birds, and sometimes reptiles. Known for its hooting call, the horned owl is a skilled and efficient hunter, silently swooping down on its unsuspecting prey from above. It is a symbol of wisdom, strength, and stealth in many cultures and is considered one of the most impressive and iconic owl species in the world.
