What is a "penalty shoot-out"?
A penalty shoot-out in soccer is a method used to decide the winner of a match when the score is tied after regular play and extra time. Each team selects a set number of players, usually five, to take turns shooting from the penalty spot, 12 yards or 11 meters from the goal. Only the goalkeeper defends against each shot. Teams alternate kicks, and the one with the most goals at the end of the shoot-out wins. If it remains tied, the shoot-out continues with one player from each team taking additional kicks until a winner is determined.
