It is characterized by its soft, oval-shaped body covered in a powdery white wax-like substance, giving it a mealy or cottony appearance. Mealybugs are typically found on plants, where they feed on sap by piercing the plant tissues with their long, slender mouthparts. They are known as pests in agriculture and horticulture because they can cause damage to plants by sucking out their juices, leading to stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and wilting. Mealybugs can also secrete honeydew, a sticky substance that promotes the growth of black sooty mold.
