What is a "cyst"?
A cyst is a sac or closed pocket-like structure in the body that contains fluid, air, or other substances. Cysts can form in various tissues or organs and may be non-cancerous or cancerous. They can develop for a variety of reasons, including infections, blockages of tubes or glands, or genetic conditions. Cysts often appear as lumps beneath the skin or on internal organs and may or may not cause symptoms. Treatment for cysts depends on their size, location, and underlying cause, and may include observation, drainage, medication, or surgical removal.
