A bullfinch is a small to medium-sized passerine bird that belongs to the finch family. Males are more vibrant, with pinkish-red breasts and cheeks, gray back, black wings, and a white rump. Females have a more subdued coloration, with a grayish-pink breast and cheeks and brown wings and back. They are widespread and common throughout the Northern Hemisphere, inhabiting forests, orchards, and gardens. Bullfinches have a distinctive and melodic song and are known for their social nature, often gathering in small flocks outside of the breeding season. They primarily feed on seeds and fruits, but may also consume insects during the breeding season. Due to their striking appearance, bullfinches have been popular cage birds and have been extensively bred for the pet trade.
