What is "spinal cord"?

The spinal cord is a long, thin, tubular bundle of nerves that runs from the base of the brain to the lower back. It is part of the central nervous system and serves as the main pathway for transmitting signals between the brain and the rest of the body. The spinal cord is protected by the vertebral column and is composed of grey and white matter. Grey matter contains cell bodies and dendrites of neurons, while white matter contains myelinated axons that transmit signals up and down the spinal cord.
