a three-layered protective covering that surrounds the brain and spinal cord
What are "meninges"?
The meninges are a protective covering that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Consisting of three layers, namely the dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater, the meninges serve as a barrier and provide structural support to the central nervous system. The outermost layer, the dura mater, is thick and tough, while the middle layer, the arachnoid mater, is delicate and web-like. The innermost layer, the pia mater, is thin and adheres closely to the surface of the brain and spinal cord. Together, the meninges help cushion and protect the delicate neural tissues from mechanical shocks and provide a supportive framework for the proper functioning of the central nervous system.
