What is a "hooded seal"?
The hooded seal is a large species of seal known for its unique appearance and behavior. Adult male hooded seals are known for their inflatable nasal sac, or "hood," which they can inflate and deflate to make a distinctive balloon-like structure on their heads during mating displays. They also have large, dark eyes and a robust body covered in thick blubber and fur, which can vary in color from silvery gray to yellowish-brown. Female hooded seals have a more subdued appearance with a lighter coloration and lack the inflatable nasal sac. Hooded seals are known for their strong diving abilities and can dive to great depths in search of prey, such as fish and squid. They are found in the cold waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic regions, and their populations are considered stable. However, they are still susceptible to threats such as climate change, pollution, and habitat disturbance.
