The slang term blerd is a blend of "black" and "nerd" and refers to a Black person who embraces interests traditionally associated with nerd culture, such as comic books, science fiction, anime, gaming, technology, and other geek-related hobbies. The word began appearing in online discussions in the early 2000s, with one of its earliest known uses in 2003 on Usenet. It gained wider recognition in 2006 after being used in an episode of the TV sitcom Scrubs, when the character Dr. Christopher Turk described someone as "the world's biggest blerd." Over time, the term has been embraced as a positive self-identifier within the Black nerd community, celebrating both cultural identity and intellectual or niche passions, and has inspired events, online communities, and media dedicated to "blerd culture."
