What is "Lyme disease"?
Lyme disease is an infectious illness caused by a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi. It is spread to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. Symptoms of Lyme disease can vary but often include a characteristic rash that looks like a target around the tick bite, fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and joint pain. In some cases, it can lead to more serious symptoms affecting the heart, nervous system, and joints if left untreated. Additionally, Lyme disease can sometimes trigger an autoimmune response in the body, leading to conditions such as Lyme arthritis or neurological complications. Treatment for Lyme disease typically involves antibiotics, which are most effective when started in the early stages of the infection.
