What is a "shawm"?
A shawm is a wooden, double-reed wind instrument that was commonly used in medieval and Renaissance music. It has a tapered shape and produces a loud, penetrating sound, thanks to its double reed, which vibrates when air is blown through it. The shawm typically features a set of finger holes and is played by covering these holes to produce different pitches.
