What is "rabies"?
Rabies is a deadly viral infection that affects the nervous system. It is usually spread through the bite of an infected animal, such as a dog, bat, or raccoon. Once the virus enters the body, it travels along nerves to the brain, where it causes inflammation and damage. Symptoms of rabies can include fever, headache, weakness, and discomfort around the bite. As the infection progresses, it can lead to confusion, agitation, hallucinations, and paralysis. Without immediate treatment, rabies is almost always deadly. However, rabies can be prevented through vaccination before exposure or through post-exposure treatment, which involves a series of rabies shots to prevent the virus from causing illness. If bitten by an animal, it is important to seek medical attention immediately to determine if treatment is needed to prevent rabies.
