What is a "red deer"?

The red deer, scientifically known as Cervus elaphus, is a species of deer that is native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It is a large deer species, with males, known as stags or bucks, weighing up to 500 kilograms (1100 pounds) and standing up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall at the shoulder. Red deer are known for their reddish-brown coat, which is typically darker in males during the breeding season. One of the most prominent features of male red deer are their impressive antlers, which can grow up to 1.2 meters (4 feet) long and have multiple points, or tines. Female red deer, known as hinds, are generally smaller and do not have antlers.
