What is a "pacesetter"?

A pacesetter is a person or horse that leads a group of athletes or horses in a race, helping to set the pace or speed for the rest of the competitors. The pacesetter's role is to maintain a steady and consistent speed, allowing other participants to follow and adjust their efforts accordingly. In some races, the pacesetter may not be racing to win but instead helps control the timing and rhythm of the event, often in events like long-distance races or in situations where a fast early pace is needed. Once their role is completed, the pacesetter typically drops out of the race.
