What is the origin of the term "homo" and how is it used?
Homo is a slang term for a person attracted to members of the same sex that emerged in early–mid 20th-century English as a shortened form of "homosexual." It began as a clinical abbreviation but quickly entered slang, often used in a derogatory or mocking way. Historically, it carried strong insulting connotations, implying abnormality or deviance, though some communities have occasionally reclaimed it for ironic or playful use. Today, outside historical or self-identifying contexts, it is still generally considered offensive, and its use in neutral or polite speech is discouraged.
