What is "Graves' disease"?
Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes the thyroid gland to become overactive, a condition known as hyperthyroidism. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid, leading to the overproduction of thyroid hormones. Symptoms of Graves' disease can include rapid heartbeat, weight loss, increased appetite, sweating, nervousness, irritability, and swelling of the thyroid gland. Some people may also experience eye problems, such as bulging eyes and vision issues. Treatment for Graves' disease may involve medications to reduce thyroid hormone production, radioactive therapy to shrink the thyroid gland, or surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid.
