What is a "frogmouth"?

A frogmouth is a fascinating bird species that possesses unique characteristics, found primarily in the forests and woodlands of Asia, Australia, and New Guinea. With a distinctive appearance, frogmouths have a stocky body, large head, and wide, hooked beak. Their plumage often blends with their environment, providing excellent camouflage during the day when they roost motionless on tree branches. Frogmouths are predominantly nocturnal hunters, relying on their exceptional night vision and silent flight to capture their prey, which includes insects, small mammals, and occasionally, birds. They are known for their large, wide mouths, giving them their name, and they have a habit of perching with their beaks wide open, resembling a tree branch or a broken-off stump. This remarkable behavior enhances their camouflage and allows them to surprise unsuspecting prey.
