What is a "dilation and curettage"?

A dilation and curettage (D&C) is a medical procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the uterus. During the procedure, the cervix is widened to allow tools to be inserted into the uterus. A curette, a spoon-shaped tool, is used to gently scrape and remove tissue from the lining of the uterus. D&C is commonly performed to check abnormal bleeding, miscarriages, or to remove tissue left behind after childbirth or an abortion.

Examples
The doctor recommended a dilation and curettage to address the abnormal bleeding.
