What is a "crane fly"?

A crane fly is a giant, slender insect with long legs and wings resembling a mosquito, though they do not bite or feed on blood. They resemble oversized mosquitoes but do not possess the same biting mouthparts and are harmless to humans. Crane flies are often found in damp environments such as gardens, meadows, and near bodies of water. They have a relatively short adult lifespan and are known for their weak flying abilities.
