What is a "cerastes"?

A cerastes, commonly known as the horned viper, is a venomous snake species found in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East. It is named for the prominent horn-like scales above each eye, which are used for camouflage and defense. The cerastes is well-adapted to desert environments, with its ability to bury itself in the sand and ambush prey.
