What is a "dohyo"?

A dohyo is a ring-like arena used in sumo wrestling. It is a raised, circular platform where the wrestlers compete. The dohyo is made of clay and is traditionally about 4.55 meters in diameter. The area is marked with a straw border, and the wrestlers are expected to stay within the ring during the match. The goal of sumo is for one wrestler to force the other out of the dohyo or to make them touch the ground with anything other than the soles of their feet. The dohyo serves as the center of competition in sumo wrestling.
