A defenseman is a player in sports like hockey or lacrosse whose main role is to protect their team’s goal and stop the opposing team from scoring. They often stay closer to their own goal, block shots, and challenge opponents to regain possession of the ball or puck. Defensemen also help their team start attacks by passing to forwards or carrying the ball or puck forward when possible.
