What is an "imprimatura"?

Imprimatura is the initial layer of paint applied to a canvas or board in painting. This thin, see-through layer of color acts as a base for later layers of paint, helping to create the overall mood and layout of the artwork. The imprimatura layer often improves the depth and quality of the finished piece by allowing some of its color to show through the other layers of paint.
