What is "currywurst"?

Currywurst is a fast food dish of German origin consisting of steamed, fried sausage, usually pork, cut into bite-sized chunks and seasoned with curry ketchup, a sauce based on spiced ketchup or tomato paste topped with curry powder, or a ready-made ketchup seasoned with curry and other spices. It is believed to have been invented by a street vendor in Berlin in 1949, when she mixed ketchup and curry powder with fresh peppers, paprika and other spices and poured it over a fried and sliced boiled sausage. The dish is often served with chips.
