goldwasser definition and meaning

What is "goldwasser"?

Goldwasser is a traditional liqueur that originated in the city of Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland) in the 16th century. It is a clear and colorless spirit that is flavored with a blend of herbs and spices, including cinnamon, clove, and anise, as well as small flakes of 22 karat gold leaf. The gold flakes are suspended in the liqueur and give it a distinctive and luxurious appearance, as well as a subtle metallic taste. Goldwasser is typically consumed as a digestif, and is often served chilled or over ice. It has a complex and spicy flavor, with notes of honey, citrus, and ginger, and a hint of warmth from the alcohol.
