Blood type
What is "blood type"?
Blood type refers to the classification of blood based on certain substances found on red blood cells. The main blood types are A, B, AB, and O, depending on which substances are present or missing. Blood can also be either Rh-positive or Rh-negative, which means it has or does not have an additional substance called the Rh factor. Knowing a person’s blood type is crucial for safe blood donations and organ replacements, as matching the blood types helps avoid dangerous reactions.
Example
There are four main blood types: A, B, AB, and O, each with unique characteristics.
Blood type O is known as the universal donor because it can be given to recipients of any blood type.
A child's blood type is determined by the combination of their parents' blood types, following specific genetic rules.
Hospitals routinely test patients' blood types before surgery to ensure compatibility with donor blood if needed.
Knowing your blood type is important for medical emergencies and transfusions.
