Who is a "split end"?
A split end is a wide receiver position in American football who lines up on the outside of the field, away from the offensive line. The split end’s main responsibility is to run routes and catch passes. This player is typically faster and more agile than other players on the team, using their speed to get open and receive the ball from the quarterback. Unlike other receivers who may be positioned closer to the line, the split end is set apart, often forcing defenders to cover a larger area and creating more space for offensive plays.
