What is a "beeper"?

A beeper is a small, portable device that receives short messages or alerts, often in the form of a numeric or text message. When someone needs to reach the user, they send a signal to the beeper, which then vibrates, makes a sound, or displays a message. Beepers were widely used before cell phones became common, especially in professional settings such as hospitals, emergency services, and businesses. They allowed users to receive messages and respond to them later, but they did not offer the ability to make phone calls or send lengthy messages. Beepers are now largely outdated due to the widespread use of mobile phones.
