What is a "negative"?
In photography, a negative is an image on film where the light and dark areas are reversed. This means that the bright parts of the original scene appear dark, and the dark parts appear light. Negatives are typically used as an intermediate step in the photographic process; they are developed from the exposed film and then used to create positive prints, where the tones are correctly represented. Negatives can be in black and white or color, depending on the type of film used.
