What is a "mantelet"?

A mantelet is a short cape-like garment that was popular in the 19th century. It is typically made from silk, satin, or other luxurious fabrics and is often trimmed with lace or fur. The mantelet was worn over a dress or other formal attire as a fashionable accessory that provided a bit of warmth without detracting from the overall look of the outfit.
