What is "chlamydia"?

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia trachomatis. It can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat, and can spread through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected partner. Symptoms of chlamydia may include pain or discomfort during urination, unusual discharge from the male or female reproductive organs, and pain or swelling in the genital area. However, many people with chlamydia do not experience any symptoms. If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease in women, infertility, and increased risk of contracting other STIs.
