What is a "bye"?
A bye refers to a situation where a player does not participate in a round, usually because there is an odd number of players in a tournament or event. The player who receives the bye automatically progresses to the next round without playing a game. This can happen when there is no opponent available, and typically, the player is awarded a point or half-point depending on the tournament rules.

What is a "bye"?
A bye in cricket occurs when the batter does not hit the ball, but the ball passes the batter and the wicketkeeper. If the ball goes past the wicketkeeper and the fielding team is unable to stop it, the batters can take runs, known as byes. Byes are counted as runs for the batting team, but the batter is not credited with them. This usually happens when the ball is difficult for the wicketkeeper to catch, or if the wicketkeeper misses the ball.
