What is a "tengu"?

A tengu is a mythical creature from Japanese folklore, often depicted with a humanoid shape, but with features such as a beak, long nose, or red face, and sometimes with the ability to fly. They are known for their martial skills and can be either benevolent or malevolent. Tengu are associated with mountains and forests and are sometimes considered guardians or protectors of these natural places. In other stories, they are seen as tricksters or mischief-makers.
