What is "plankton"?

Plankton refers to a diverse community of microscopic organisms that inhabit bodies of water, ranging from freshwater lakes to vast oceans. It includes both plant-like organisms called phytoplankton and animal-like organisms called zooplankton. These tiny organisms play a crucial role in marine ecosystems as they serve as the foundation of the food chain. Phytoplankton are responsible for producing a significant portion of the world's oxygen through photosynthesis, while zooplankton feed on the phytoplankton and serve as a food source for many larger marine organisms.
