"Redneck" is an American slang term that appeared in the late 19th to early 20th century, originally describing poor white farmers in the Southern U.S. who developed sunburned necks from working long hours in the fields. By extension, it came to describe a rural, working-class person, often stereotyped as socially conservative, uneducated, or culturally unsophisticated.
