What is "diglossia"?
Diglossia is a situation where two different varieties of the same language are used by a community in different social contexts. One variety, often called the "high" variety, is used in formal situations, such as education, literature, or government, while the other variety, known as the "low" variety, is used in everyday conversation and informal settings. The high variety is usually considered more prestigious and may not be spoken as fluently by the general population, while the low variety is the language that most people are comfortable using. Diglossia illustrates how language can reflect social hierarchies and cultural practices within a community.
