What is a "long-eared owl"?
A long-eared owl is a medium-sized owl species with prominent ear tufts resembling cat ears. They are found in Europe, Asia, North, and South America, and have a distinctive appearance with a reddish-brown facial disc and contrasting blackish eyes. Long-eared owls are mostly active at night and can be found in a variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, and even urban parks. They primarily feed on small mammals, such as rodents and shrews, but also eat birds, insects, and other prey. During the breeding season, long-eared owls are monogamous and typically nest in trees or bushes. They are known for their distinctive calls, including a series of hoots and barks, which they use to communicate with each other. Despite being relatively common, long-eared owls can be difficult to spot due to their excellent camouflage and nocturnal habits.
