What is a "cold sore"?

A cold sore, also known as a fever blister, is a small, painful sore that typically appears around the lips or mouth. It is caused by a virus called the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Cold sores are highly contagious and can be spread through close contact with an infected person or by sharing items like utensils or towels. They usually start as a tingling or itching sensation before developing into a group of fluid-filled blisters. Cold sores can be triggered by factors such as stress, illness, hormonal changes, or exposure to sunlight. While there is no cure for the herpes virus that causes cold sores, they often heal on their own within a week or two.
