What are "mushy peas"?
Mushy peas are a stapled side dish in northern British cuisine, consisting of dried marrowfat peas that have been soaked, cooked, and mashed to a coarse purée. They are traditionally served with dishes like fish and chips or bangers and mash. To achieve the perfect consistency, the cooked peas must be stirred and mashed frequently so they develop a smooth but chunky texture, with a few pea skins and whole peas still lightly visible. Because they require no further preparation once cooked, mushy peas make a quick and simple side dish. The spreadable texture and rich flavor profile make them a classic accompaniment to hearty Northern British meals, elevating traditional pub fare with a dose of comfort and nostalgia.
