What is a "sloth bear"?
The sloth bear, or Melursus ursinus, is a species of bear found in the Indian subcontinent. They are known for their unique appearance, characterized by a shaggy, long coat of fur that is typically black or dark brown, a distinctive white or cream-colored V-shaped marking on their chest, and a long, flexible snout. Sloth bears are smaller than other bear species, with an average length of about 5 to 6 feet and a weight ranging from 200 to 300 pounds. They are primarily insectivorous, with a diet that consists mostly of termites and ants, which they extract using their specialized snout and powerful claws. Sloth bears are excellent climbers and are known for their ability to tear apart termite mounds with their strong forelimbs and teeth. They are primarily solitary animals and are usually active during the night, spending much of their time foraging for food.
