What is a "b lymphocyte"?

A "B lymphocyte", also known as a "B cell", is a crucial component of the immune system in the human body. They play a vital role in the adaptive immune response by producing antibodies, which are specialized proteins that help recognize and neutralize pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. B lymphocytes are generated in the bone marrow and then mature in the lymphoid organs, such as the spleen and lymph nodes. Upon encountering an antigen, B cells can differentiate into plasma cells, which secrete large amounts of antibodies, or memory cells, which "remember" the pathogen for future immune responses. B lymphocytes are essential for the defense against infections and contribute to the development of long-term immunity.
