What is "lichen planus"?
Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the skin, inner linings of the mouth, hair, and nails. It is characterized by the presence of itchy, flat-topped, purple or reddish bumps or wounds that can occur anywhere on the body, but commonly appear on the wrists, ankles, lower back, and genitals. In the mouth, lichen planus can cause white, lacy patches or open wounds. The exact cause of lichen planus is unknown, but it is believed to involve an abnormal immune response. While the condition can be uncomfortable, it is not contagious or life-threatening. Treatment for lichen planus focuses on relieving symptoms and may include ointments and medications to reduce inflammation and itching.
