What is "Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease"?

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare and deadly brain disorder that causes rapid mental decline, neurological problems, and movement difficulties. It belongs to a group of conditions known as prion diseases, which occur when abnormal proteins called prions gather in the brain and disturb normal brain function. Symptoms of CJD can include memory loss, personality changes, hallucinations, muscle stiffness, and coordination problems. The disease progresses rapidly, typically leading to serious disability and death within a year of the disease starting. There is currently no cure for CJD, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and providing supportive care. CJD can occur spontaneously, be inherited, or spread through contaminated medical procedures, such as organ transplants or injections with contaminated materials. However, spread through these routes is extremely rare.
